Tuesday 19 June 2007 Chile’s senate approved US$290mn injection into a integrated public transport system: Transantiago, thats caused severals problems in the society’s Quality of life. A plan without intelligence, leadership and solutions; under a fatigued government.
With a “victory” of 20 votes against 18, the senate approved the monetary injection that will “guarantee” the system’s normal operations for the rest of the year, and cover its projected 2007 deficit, keeping the system running without needing to increase fares until at least year-end.
The project; more than a Discussion to find a true solution, was reduced to simple scene of “buy votes” at last hour.
The deficit forecast comes from analysis of Transantiago’s financial results during the first three months of operations. Some 80% of the government funding will cover the shortfall in the system’s revenues.
Most of this deficit was the result of bad administration of René Cortázar, and the poor implementation of system’s technological operator Sonda.
In Tech terms: a significant number of buses continue running without charging passengers, operating without an active electronic device, no GPS, no EURO III emissions standards = worst SMOG levels in years.
With the financing approved in congress, authorities are preparing to discuss the possibility of expanding the role of capital Santiago’s Metro company to handle both the subway network and buses, the transport ministry official said.
